Frequently asked questions

What is a doula?

A birth doula is a trained professional who provides physical and emotional support to all parties in the birth team.

Why should I hire a doula?

The World Health Organization has published an opinion paper on the practices of healthy birth. One of these practices is the need for all laboring women to have continuous physical and emotional support in labor. A birth doula is trained to fulfill this role. In addition, the presence of a birth doula has been associated with fewer medical interventions, less use of pain medications, lower C/S rates and higher reports of positive birth experiences.

Can I afford a doula?

A Mother's Touch is an enrolled Medicaid provider. Applications as an enrolled provider for the MHPs available in Isabella County (Blue Cross Complete, McLaren, Meridian, and Molina) are currently being reviewed. Until acceptance is verified, I offer payment plans and a sliding scale for those who wish to engage my services as a private-pay option. Please don't let financial hardship prevent you from reaching out for a free consultation.

Do I have to take childbirth classes?

Labor and delivery is a challenging physical and emotii9nal journey. It makes sense to learn as much as you can about the process. After all, you wouldn't run a marathon without preparing, labor is a physically demanding process that requires training.

Where can I find childbirth classes?

I offer a low-cost, in-person class that follows the recommendations of ICEA regarding required educational topics related to pregnancy and childbirth. I also offer personal childbirth education one-on-one in your home. Should you engage my services as a doula, personal childbirth education will be included in your prenatal visits.

Other options are available in the community. Check with your provider or ask me about the childbirth classes located in Region 5. I can help you find the class that works best for you.

Are childbirth classes covered by insurance?

Yes but no, confused? Insurance doesn't directly cover the cost of childbirth education; however, your insurance may reimburse you for what you pay out of pocket. HSA & FSA funds can also be used to pay for classes. Ask your insurance provider about their reimbursement process.
